The Only Page That Can Speak For PocketBill

Published 2026-10-20 · PocketBill team

I spent a month trying to apply Chinese content playbooks to an app that has no accounts to post from. The wall that protects PocketBill's users is the same wall that keeps anyone from speaking for it.

Two internets, one of them walled

A friend who runs GEO campaigns for Chinese brands going overseas told me the thing I had been missing. In China, the good content — real reviews, real complaints — is locked inside super apps. In the West it still lives on the open web, at URLs, where Bing and Google can crawl it and ChatGPT and Gemini can read it. Same discipline, two completely different physics.

His clients spend their budget on volume: more accounts, more posts, more mentions. I listened for an hour and kept thinking about PocketBill, which has none of that. No accounts to post from, because it has no accounts at all.

The app with no door to knock on

PocketBill keeps subscriptions, bills and spending on the phone itself. No sign-up, works on a plane. I built it that way because I was tired of handing a budgeting app my email address just to log a coffee.

The privacy was the point, and it still is. What I hadn't priced in is that a local-first app is also invisible. No account means no sign-in event, so there is no funnel to look at. No server means no analytics, so I genuinely don't know what people search for before they find me or what they type after they arrive. Every playbook I read about overseas growth starts with "mine the questions your support tickets are full of" — and I have no tickets, because there is nobody to file one.

The wall that keeps my users' data safe is the same wall that keeps anyone else from ever describing this product for me. I can't hire a distribution channel. There is no channel.

So the homepage has to be the whole voice

Which leaves exactly one surface that can explain PocketBill to a machine: the site itself. Not a hundred mentions scattered across communities I'd have to fake my way into — one page that says plainly what this is, with screenshots I actually took and numbers I actually measured. Overseas models don't reward popularity. They reward specificity from someone who has clearly used the thing.

So I rewrote the top of the page as a single sentence I would be happy to see quoted anywhere: it records subscriptions, bills and spending, needs no account, and works offline. That sentence is doing more work than a month of posting ever could, because it's the only sentence about this app that is true and checkable.

I still don't know what my users are searching for. I've decided that's a fair trade — I'd rather guess at their questions than read their inbox.
