The Entry Fee Nobody Mentions

Published 2026-10-11 · PocketBill team

A $9.99 charge I couldn't place, and the realization that most tools charge an entry fee before they do anything for you — the same trade-off a UI library makes when it says beautiful by default.

The thing I never set up

On March's statement there is a charge for 9.99. I stared at it for half a minute and could not remember what it was. Two months of a note-taking app, maybe. Or a font I bought at midnight.

What I remember is that PocketBill had the number before I had the answer. I typed 9.99 into it on the day it happened, standing in a kitchen, and never opened a settings screen to do it. No accounts to create, no categories to name, no budget to set first. There is no login screen at all.

Every other money app I have tried asked me to build the filing cabinet before it would hold a single receipt.

Beautiful by default is the same promise

I was reading about a React UI library the other day — HeroUI, formerly NextUI — and its whole pitch is one line: beautiful by default. You do not design a button before you have a page. You do not build a modal from scratch, or spend an afternoon on keyboard handling for a dropdown, or invent a dark mode.

Underneath, it pairs React Aria Components with Tailwind CSS v4, so the styling, the interaction and the accessibility arrive together. Then you start from something that already works.

That is the same promise PocketBill makes, just in a different room. A component library refuses to charge you a setup fee before you get a button. PocketBill refuses to charge you a setup fee before you get a record.

Every shortcut has an opinion attached

The catch, and the library's own docs are honest about this, is that you are accepting part of someone else's design philosophy. Save time now, adopt their taste later. If your team already has a design system, the migration cost is real.

Finance apps are exactly like this. The fast ones decide for you: your coffee is Coffee, your rent is Housing, and last month's 9.99 is, according to them, Subscriptions. That is a library with opinions, installed in your own ledger.

What I wanted was the opposite. Keep my own messy words for things. Let me write "that app I keep forgetting to cancel" next to a number, and leave it there until I figure it out.

Tools should not require you to be organized first

The reason I keep coming back to this: almost every tool I abandon, I abandon during setup. Not because it is bad, but because it wants me to become a tidier person before it will help the person I actually am.

I never did place that 9.99 that night. It is still sitting there with a vague note attached, and that is fine. The point of writing it down in a second was to have it, not to have filed it.

A good default is not a feature. It is a refusal to make you earn the first step.
